Committee Chair Report

  • Troop 840 stayed at St. Ann’s last night.  Will do it again tonight, Saturday, 07-September-2002.  Looks like we’re well covered.
  • Going to Turner Falls on 9/13, 9/14 and 9/15.  Will leave around 5:30 p.m. from SLRBC.  Circulated driver list for this camping event.  Will circulate again at Tuesday night’s Meeting.
  • Adult Leader Training on 9/28 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church.  10:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. sessions on this day.  Outdoor Leader Training will be held on Thursday, October 3rd at 7:00 p.m. at Plymouth Park United Methodist Church (PPUMC).

Scoutmaster Report

·        Mr. Wilt couldn’t be here for this meeting.  Mr. Smith reported that we’re going to do Junior Leader Training at our next camp out.

·        Dr. Lacey is trying to swap months for astronomy camp out from November to December.

·        October’s camp out (10/12 and 10/13) will be at Beaver’s Bend.  We need to figure out how back packing will be handled.  Go there and hike in around 1-mile via back packing.  No reservation required.

Outdoor Activities

  • Turner Falls leaving Friday at 5:30 and returning at 1:00 p.m. at SLRBC.  It is a 1-1/2 hour drive.  Maps on the website.  They don’t reserve sites, either.  It would be best if someone could have an advance group to stake claim to sites.  At this time, we do not have enough drivers for the camp out at Turner Falls.

Have horse back riding available.  No reservations taken.  Arrive at 9:00 a.m. and schedule when you want scouts to ride.  If they are all healthy, will have 10 horses at a time.  Horseback riding is $15.00 for one hour.  Scouts will need to wear jeans if they plan to do horseback riding.  We will collect the money from the scouts on Friday night at check in if they are planning to ride horses on Saturday.  If they don’t ride, they will get their money back.  The horse back riding will not apply to horseback riding merit badge.

  • November camp out is now open due to the movement of the astronomy camp out to December.  The Lexington is not open for either of these months.  Will need a decision on November as soon as possible.
  • December will be Rush Creek.
  • January is Coppell Camporee.
  • February is Group Dynamix.
  • March is Camporee at Lake Bardwell in Ennis, TX.  March 28th and 29th.

Treasurer’s Report

·        Troop funds appear to be in line with projections.  Reports available.

·        Popcorn money raised as a result of sales this fall will continue to accrue to the individual scouts that sold the popcorn.  This money can be used for Summer Camp and other Troop sponsored trips.

·        The Treasurer will do an update to scout’s accounts for October’s meeting.

·        The Treasurer’s report was approved.

Equipment Report

·        Mr. Green said the trailer got loaded last Tuesday evening.  Will have to address issues about exploded dishwashing soaps (from the heat in the storage area).  Large propane containers have to be swapped out and refilled.

·        Seemed like we had a large number of tents functional.  If we get them all back, there should be enough for this camp out.

·        Mr. Green called about the canopy.  To get all new metal pieces is $48.50 plus taxes shipping.  New canopy and bungees are another $84.00.  Will get new poles at Home Depot.  Mr. Kim will take care of the poles.  There was a vote and approval to spend funds to replace the “scaffolding” (all of the metal pieces, not the canopy or bungees).

·        Will purchase additional keys to existing trailer locks rather than replacing the locks.  Mr. Green will have five (5) sets made.

·        Status of purchasing boot lock for green trailer.  Mr. Hohnholt and Mr. Green will investigate opportunities to purchase a boot lock.  If anyone in the troop has specific knowledge of who to buy one from, please contact Mr. Green.  If we can’t find a boot lock within the next couple of months, we’ll purchase a chain to secure the trailer.

OA Report

·        Our Scout representative on OA, Master Bryce Looney, has not been going to the meetings.  The next meetings will be held on the second (2nd) Monday of the month and on the fourth (4th) Thursday of the month at the Plymouth Park United Methodist Church (PPUMC) in Irving.

·        Rig pieces should be brought to the meetings and returned.

Advancements

  • Two (2) scouts will be going to Den Chief training this coming weekend (Austin Dean and Matt Bohn) on Saturday, 14-September-2002.  The Cub Scout Den Chief must write a letter to our Troop Advancement Chairperson, Mrs. Kressmann, as confirmation of their active and successful participation as a Den Chief.  This is to make sure Advancement knows you are an active Den Chief to get credit for the time in position.
  • Golden Acorn – website under Troop News.  They are asking for scouts to express interest in attending Golden Acorn earlier than usual although no firm commitment is required at this time.
  • Safe Swim and Safety Afloat training is available this coming Saturday, 14-September-2002, at Camp Wisdom from 10-12 and 1:30 to 3:30.  Fee for attending is $5.00 per participant.

Membership

  • School Night for Scouting (SNFS) was conducted on 8/30/2002.  We participated in three (3) of the Coppell Schools events.  There are two (2) more schools holding their SNFS this week.  We want to have more visibility at Cub Scouts.  We want to encourage our Scouts to participate in Flag ceremonies, games and training events.
  • The Membership box is missing from the closet.  Mrs. Lacey will recheck the closet to see if she can locate the box.
  • We need someone to build a distribution list with all E-Mail addresses in it.  Yahoo does not always work.  Mr. Rabbitt will build it for the Troop.  Please send Mr. Rabbitt your current (preferred) E-Mail address(es) and he will include them in the Troop distribution list.
  • No Parents’ Meeting this Tuesday night at SLRBC because of the Revival meeting.  There will be a brief PLC meeting before the Revival Meeting at 6:45 for all Patrol Leaders.  Jason Brandt will contact everyone to let them know.

Senior Patrol Leader

  • Justin Webb was unable to attend.  Jason Brandt attended on his behalf.  Justin Webb has the sign up sheet for attendance for last night’s St. Ann’s sleep over.  Had good attendance last night.

High Adventure / Venture

·        There will be one major event each quarter for Venture and smaller events taking place every other month.  On 21-September-2002, the Venture group will be going to Stone Works in the morning.  This is a climbing gym in Carrollton.  The details for this event are still being worked out.

·        In order to participate in Venture, a Scout must be at the Life rank and at least 14 years of age.  They meet every other Tuesday during game time.

·        Philmont trek will take place on 05-July-2003 through 13-July-2003.  Mr. Allen Shyne will arrange for riding lessons on 22-September-2002 at 5:00 p.m.  There is still one slot open for the riding lesson on 22-September-2002.

·        On 15-February-2003, the Horsemanship Merit Badge will be offered at Camp Cherokee.  This has been reserved.

·        Details for the 2004 Philmont call in will be distributed to the Troop via the website and/or next month’s Committee Meeting minutes.

Additional Announcements

  • Chili Supper tickets (1500) were distributed to Scouts on 03-September-2002.  The supper will be held on 08-November-2002.  The chili pre-cook will take place on 03-November-2002, the Sunday before the supper.  The contract with the school (CHS) is signed.  The Troop will not have to pay for use of the facilities.  We just have to pay for the Kitchen Supervisor.  The rules to earn Scout Bucks for chili supper ticket sales are on the Troop website.  There is the potential to create a “to go package” (one meal) so people can take it with them to the football game.  There has been more adult participation in this event than scout participation.  To encourage more scout participation, there will be a 1,000 Scout Buck incentive awarded for each hour a scout works at the Chili Supper.  Trying to determine how to work store sales.  Ace Hardware has been popular before but the grocery stores have not really worked well. Possibility of selling tickets on the corner of Parkway and Denton Tap (by Eckerd’s or Walgreens) on Friday nights of home football games.
